All you need to know about weft hair extensions

Weft hair extensions or hair weft is a collection of artificial hair strands that is woven on to a fine strip of cloth to make a β€œweft.” Technically, hair wefts are manufactured for salons and stylist professionals to be attached using various semi-permanent fitting methods to apply some form of hair extension on salon clients.

Historically, wefts were originally designed by Afro-hair stylists who created cornrows around the scalp and then would sew the weft to the cornrows. This ingenious fitting method is most recently gathering popularity with hair extension salons in Europe. This is because it is a natural and sustainable fitting method that requires no heating or glue.

Confusion with weft and weave

There is often a confusion with weft hair extensions and weave hair extensions. Weft mainly describes the hair extension, while weave is the method used to attach the weft to real hair. In the hair extension industry, weft and weave are actually used interchangeably.

How is weft hair extension attached?

Micro ring hair extensions

Micro ring weft hair extension is a popular way to attach weft hair since anyone with any hair type can use this method. The rings cause no damage and can be reused. Once the weft hair has been attached to the original hair using micro rings or loops, it can be used for up to two months before there is a need to move up the rings or reattach them.

Sewing

The hair is braided into cornrows. The weft hair is then sewn into the cornrows. While this method suits all types of hair, this method is not recommended for those with damaged, fragile, and weak hair.

Tape-in

A thin layer of hair is squeezed between two pieces of skin weft extensions using a special type of tape. However, this method requires reinstallation after six weeks. This method is also called skin weft extensions. It is called skin weft because it is designed to provide a seamless and scalp-like effect for users. This means that other people cannot detect if you are wearing an extension.
